Critical::Path::Css::Worker
This gem provides a worker that automatically extracts a page's critical css and keeps it up to date.
** Warning ** This gem should be considered prerelease
Installation
Add this line to your application's Gemfile:
gem 'critical-path-css-worker'
And then execute:
$ bundle
Or install it yourself as:
$ gem install critical-path-css-worker
Add to your application.rb
require 'critical_path_css_worker/worker'
To test your app on development ensure that you run
rake assets:precompile
and have sidekiq running locally
bundle exec sidekiq -c 2
Usage
This gem depends on the loadcss-rails gem. Per their instructions.
The loadCSS and onloadCSS files will be added to the asset pipeline and available for you to use. Add the lines that you need to your application's JS manifest (usually app/assets/javascripts/application.js).

Include this gem in your application_controller.rb
include CriticalPathCssWorker
Add the critical css code to your application.html.haml. In the example below 'path' is the url or path for the current page and the default css file is presumed to be 'application'.

Make sure analytics ignore the Penthouse headless browser used to generate the css

Development
After checking out the repo, run bin/setup
to install dependencies. Then, run rake spec
to run the tests. You can also run bin/console
for an interactive prompt that will allow you to experiment.
To install this gem onto your local machine, run bundle exec rake install
. To release a new version, update the version number in version.rb
, and then run bundle exec rake release
, which will create a git tag for the version, push git commits and tags, and push the .gem
file to rubygems.org.
